Europe’s power networks need stronger crisis strategies

European transmission system operators need to abandon decades-old emergency planning standards as blackouts this year in Spain, Portugal Italy, France, Czechia and southeast Europe have exposed critical vulnerabilities. Otherwise, as electricity demand soars and renewables reshape the grid, Europe's aging planning frameworks may find it hard to keep the lights on.
