Can a new electricity highway bridge Norway’s price gap?
Norway’s problems with transmission bottlenecks are long-running, but the issue has become even more acute in recent years, as new interconnectors, rapid electrification and heavier precipitation in the north of the country have clearly exposed grid limitations. On 2 October, a new 420 kV Aurland-Sogndal power line was brought into service, immediately strengthening power flows between Norway’s western NO5 and central NO3 bidding zones. But what role is this new electricity line going to play in bridging the country’s significant power price gap between the hydro-rich north and demand-heavy south?
